Rīgas FS/Cerība 46. VSK 0-2 Riga United FC Ladies
Aune 27', 90'
In a similar scene to their first fixture vs Ceriba last
year, Riga United took to the field in glorious sunshine and a
decent support behind them. And in very a similar situation,
Riga United won the game, as they did last year, 2-0.
The two goals from Kristin Aune, now takes her tally to four goals
this season, currently making her the top goalscorer. The
first goal was scored in the 27th minute as Riga United got into a
fine spell of passing. A cross came in from the left, however
it was cleared out only as far as Anna Bang, who was hovering
outside the area. She saw Aune make the run into the box and
played an excellent through ball, for Aune to slide the ball home.
The second came in the last minute of the match. Aune took the ball
ready outside the lefthand side of the penalty area and with a
thunderbolt and the keeper unable to save it, planted it in the top
right hand corner of the goal, to the relief of the players
and coach.
Riga were looking to come out the blocks firing against Cerība and
they were however, it may be apparent that the toughness of playing
on Thursday, had its toll on the players. The team didn’t
quite get off to the start they wanted and the first 10 minutes or
so saw some good passing but not much in the way of shooting.
United finally started to find their feet in the game when a few
long range efforts came close and a couple of crosses came in,
causing problems for the defence. Then the atmosphere changed
and relief set in when Aune got the first goal for Riga. They tried
to search for a second in the first half but the Cerība defence, to
their credit, kept Riga at bay.
The second half started much as the first. Riga United looked
strong going forward, Cerības attack slowing down and being
nullified by the defence, however the first part didn’t see much in
the way of goal action, as Cerības defence chose to put everyone
behind the ball and the opposition’s goalie to match.
United did have a few chances though. May Ali recording a strike
outside the box that just went a little over the bar and Jevgenija
Arzubova broke through the defence on the left only to see her
strike saved by the goalie. With the game looking like it was
peating out to a 1-0 victory, Aune had one last say on the matter
and scored an exciting 2nd goal before the final whistle.
All in all Riga will be happy with their first three points of the
season but they need to take their chances and kill of teams if
they are to improve on last season. The passing play and the
ball economy was a marked improvement and it’s most certainly
something they can take going to Liepāja this weekend.
RUFC Ladies' manager Justin Walley, was pleased with getting the
victory and was very positive about the performance after the game,
""I was really impressed by the girls' patience in grinding out
this result. It was a very hot day and Ceriba parked 11 players
behind the ball each time we attacked. Their keeper also had a very
safe pair of hands - catching more than 10 shots at her. The first
goal was very well worked between Kristin, Anna and Jevgenija. The
second goal was a trademark Kristin goal. I was certain when she
picked the ball up that she was going to score. We had more than 10
players unavailable and some of the passing football from those
that day play was great to see. I was really impressed with Gina
[Grosland] playing at centre half for the first time: knowing she
is so comfortable there is one of the big things we learnt from
this game. It was also great having goalkeeper coach Danny Lloyd
help us out with Amanda Palmer's preparation for this game and
seeing her keep a clean sheet."
Player of the Match: Kristin Aune. Not only for the two
goals, but also for the workrate in the middle of the field.
Fantastic performance.
