22 / 01 / 2016
Riga United striker comes to the rescue in the 93rd minute
Latvia's women return home from Malta today having drawn 1-1
with Malta in the second of their two friendly matches against
their southern European hosts.
The first game ended 0-3 and Vaciete had to come from the bench in
the 58th minute to rescue the national team in the second game,
scoring with the last kick of the game to give the visitors a
hard-earned draw. Vaciete latched on to a through ball from 35
yards out and broke away from the home defence before evading the
oncoming Malta goalkeeper and slotting home from a tight angle.
The United striker has now scored 7 goals for the national team
in less than 12 months. She told rigaunited.com:
"The goal was a team effort. It just shows our character that we
fight till the last minute."
Asked about her overall experience in Malta, Liene told our
official website: "It was just good to have this kind of level
of matches because we need this experience and learning as we don't
get the same quality of football in the women's league. The
national team games are the only place where we can learn to play
to this tempo and quality...it was also good to escape snowy
Latvia!"
